Yours, Mine, and Ours: Art and Community
Kuster, Deborah; TerAvest, Matt
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n4 p42-43 Dec 2007
Christopher Adejumo identified community-based art as "works of art produced by people living within the same locality, and defined by common interests such as shared concerns, cultural heritage, traditions, and language patterns." Community-based art has the potential of heightening students' sense of personal responsibility and generating positive dispositions; demonstrating to the community the accomplishments of their students; and combining service in a way that improves learning. This article describes how Matt TerAvest orchestrated two community-based art projects during the 2005-2006 school year at both the elementary and high school levels. These two projects are: (1) Styrofoam relief prints which provided fourth- and fifth-grade students to explore the rich cultural history of New Orleans including the tragic results of Hurricane Katrina; and (2) a community mural entitled, "Freedom for the Future: Yours, Mine, and Ours" which gave the students the creative and decision-making power.
