Honoring a Classmate through Art
Power, Tracey
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n4 p34-35 Dec 2007
When a student passes away it is difficult for the entire school community. Teachers, students, and staff all feel a sense of loss and the need to do something to mitigate that feeling. Desiring a different kind of memorial, the author wanted her students to learn that they could use art to help others, as well as themselves. The author came up with an idea of an auction where the proceeds earned from student art could be a charitable contribution from their school. By using their artistic ability, her students could contribute to a worthy cause, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as express their feelings about the loss of their classmate.
