Seeing Music--Hearing Art
Stephens, Pam
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n3 p34-35 Nov 2007
In this article, the author explores the digital artwork of Brian Evans, a composer-artist who creates visualizations of sound. Through the years Evans' love for music and visual art led him to explore ways to work concurrently with image and sound. Digital technology proved to be such a means. Digital technology is based upon the transcription of bits of information into numeric data. This numeric data is known as "binary code." For digital artists such as Evans, binary code becomes a medium for producing works of art. Evans takes sound waves of music and turns them into light waves of color. He creates numeric models of sound waves and then assigns colors to numbers, like a digital paint-by-number canvas. Along with commercial image processing and computer graphic software, Evans writes his own computer programs to create his artwork. His programs visualize models of sound, such as jazz chords played by simple instruments. (Contains 1 online resource.)
