Encircling Creative Expression
Brown, Susannah
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n1 p28-29 Aug-Sep 2007
Artworks that are circular in nature are often referred to as mandalas. "Mandala" means center, circle, or circumference. Mandalas are created in many cultures for a variety of reasons, most of which are related to self-expression, ritual, and religion. In this article, the author describes how her students created mandalas. She also provides suggested activities for teachers. She concludes that this visual journey is a valuable key to self-expression and understanding the meaning within visual expression. The success of this journey evolves from a focus inward, exploration of media, and the opportunity to examine new ideas within the context of the self. (Contains 1 online resource.)
