Art from the Earth
Huntington, Patricia
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v106 n8 p42-43 Apr 2007
Mali, West Africa, holds many visual treasures for the traveler willing to forfeit the conveniences of modern society and slip into the traditional world of the Bambara people. One such treasure is Bogolan cloth, a traditional textile made with bold geometrical patterns dyed with black mud, brown tree bark, and bleach. This article describes the traditional methods of mud cloth production and includes an adaptation for classroom use in the middle school and grades four through six. This project can be a vehicle for any number of themes or cross-discipline studies. Through it, students understand and apply visual arts in relation to history and cultures, and make connections between visual arts and other disciplines. (Contains 2 online resources.)
