Architectural Adventures in Your Community
Henn, Cynthia A.
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v106 n7 p22-23 Mar 2007
Due to architecture's complexity, it can be challenging to develop lessons for the students, and consequently, the teaching of architecture is frequently overlooked. Every community has an architectural history. For example, the community in which the author's students live has a variety of historic houses from when the community originated (the Victorian era), as well as newer homes. The focus of their studies was Victorian architecture. In this article, the author describes a project wherein she challenged her students to create an original home using different parts of old homes, since most homes are a conglomerate of styles. This project was both meaningful and interesting for students. It allowed them to see how special their community was--something that they were not aware of and possibly never appreciated. Many of the resulting projects were entered in state competitions and exhibits and were well received. (Contains 2 online resources.)
