Horst, Carol
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n3 p17-19 Nov 2009
Mural painting provides an excellent opportunity for students to participate in a collaborative project. To many teachers, class mural projects seem intimidating because of organizational and logistical challenges. Many of these challenges can be mitigated, however, if there is plenty of discussion beforehand to organize ideas, get input from everyone, and clarify the means that will be used to achieve the end result. In this article, the author describes how art students worked collaboratively on a mural which broadened their definition of art, developed new understandings of design, prepared them for specific life challenges, and gave them the powerful sense of accomplishment unique to large group projects.
