Brisco, Nicole D.
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n9 p36-37 May-Jun 2010
In the author's art class, she found that many of her students in an intro art class have some technical skill, but lack the ability to think conceptually. Her goal was to create an innovative project that combined design, painting, and sculpture into a compact unit that asked students how they define themselves. In the process of answering this question, she also asked students to look at how their individual pieces could work harmoniously together. She wanted to create a large-scale installation that would make an impact on their high-school community well beyond the classroom. This article presents an exciting art project which aims students to research how artists visually define who they are through symbolism, concept, imagery, and text. (Contains 3 online resources.)
