Art for Public Places
Wall, Sharon
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n8 p56 Apr 2004
In response to a challenge by a school administrator for "some sort of mural" in the high school where she teaches art, the author of this article created a course called Art for Public Places. She wanted to create a course that would promote a sense of community among students in the class and ownership in their school environment. Also, she wanted students to experience the following: research, cooperative learning, social responsibility, planning, interdisciplinary connections, and a sense of their place in the world, not to mention developing advanced drawing, design, and painting skills. This article describes the process as her students created multiple solutions to specific visual arts problems, and demonstrate competence in producing effective relationships between structural choices and artistic functions.
