Tanjore (or Thanjavur or Thanlavoor) paintings are one of the most popular traditional art forms in Southern India. These ornate religious paintings involve Hindu mythology. The paintings are noted for their adornment of gold and semiprecious stones such as rubies, emeralds, and pearls. Currently, the semiprecious stones are often substituted with glass stones. These finely detailed paintings are characterized by rich vibrant colors, dashes of gold, and shimmering stones. This article describes how one teacher's art class re-created their own simplified version of this ancient art form using 8X10 canvas boards, tempera paints, light modeling paste, ultra fine glitter, and glass stones.
