Nevinskas, Nancy
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n6 p28 Feb 2004
Ezra Jack Keats is a well-known children's book author and illustrator. During his lifetime he illustrated over 85 children's books and wrote and illustrated 24 children's classics of his own. His stories focus on everyday events in a child's life, are set in urban areas, and feature a cast of culturally diverse characters. The author finds Keats' work to be a perfect way to enhance students' appreciation of literature and to introduce them to the field of book illustration and illustrative techniques. The author presented a unit on Ezra Jack Keats to her kindergarten through second grade students. In this unit, she introduced the students to seven of Keats' books, focusing on Keats' use of the technique of collage and his enhancement of illustrations using gouache. Students not only enjoyed his stories; they also learned about various techniques utilized to create the illustrations. The article concludes with a resource list, as well as a list of Web sites for further study.
