School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n5 p48 Jan 2004
In many American schools, class size continues to increase while art budget dollars remain the same or, even worse, decrease. Art educators need to become proactive and creative in procuring art supplies for their classrooms. This may necessitate asking for supplemental funds from the PTA or raising money through fundraising. It may also mean that art teachers must reconsider what qualifies as usable art materials. Egg cartons and toilet paper tubes are easy to find, inexpensive, and by recycling them we are not adding to our landfills. Some art teachers, concerned about the environment, strongly advocate the use of recycled materials in their classroom. Others wonder whether found-object art lessons are too craftsy or whether they are a valid form of art education. Despite arguments pro or con on this issue, many art budgets are simply not large enough to cover extra art material needs. Students obtained nontraditional art materials from the local telephone company, lumber yards, dry cleaners, home improvement stores, the stores, hotels, grocery stores, dentist offices, doctor offices, rock companies, framing stores, upholstery shops, decorating stores, wallpaper stores, rug stores, shoe stores, coffee shops, restaurants, printing companies, and roofing contractors. With a little thought and legwork, students discovered that not all art materials are found in art supply catalogs.
