Unlocking the Color of White
Sabiston, Duane
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n3 p21 Nov 2004
In this article, the author describes that teaching students how to unlock the color of white is his passion. Like so many other art teachers, he struggled for years teaching color wheels and making value scales, only to be frustrated when students produced colorful charts and then made colorless paintings. He was teaching students how to mix color, but not how to see and experience color! His frustration became clear. How could he transfer his love of color to his students? In this article, the author addresses this issue. Sections include: (1) Solving the Puzzle; (2) Talking ISH (ISH is a combination of analogies and compound color descriptions, merged by ISH--bluish-green, greenish-yellow); (3) Taking the ISH Home; (4) Evidence of Learning; and (5) Guiding Questions.
