The Healing Power of Art
Smith Anthos, Jeannette
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n1 p46 Sep 2004
This teacher believes that art has the power to heal, or at least aid in the healing process. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, her students needed some way to express the injustice they felt. They discussed the attacks, and had some free drawing to release it from their system. They even did some patriotic-themed projects to boost their spirits. However, that wasn't sufficient. Many months later the teacher noticed that when students had free drawing in art class, they were still drawing events of 9/11. She felt that her students needed a memorial project regarding 9/11. She use a theme-based approach to teaching art to the students, so using Picasso's Guernica as a springboard, they launched the unit on the injustices of war. This would allow the students to express their emotions in a positive way. The unit is discussed in this article.
