Working from Memory: Artists and Actors
Hurwitz, Al
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n9 p25 May 2004
In this article, the author discusses the art of memory-based drawing. Memory-based drawing represents but one part of a broad range of activities used in drawing instruction. Other sources involve the use of fantasy, doodling, problem-solving, and illustrating. Other ways of working from one's personal history involve keeping illustrated journals, working from family archives, or designing collages or assemblages that are self-referential. Memory drawing, as described in this article, differs from other activities in that the major emphasis lies in the reconstruction of a moment in time.
