Reflective Portfolios: "Learning Is Both an Active and Reflective Practice"
Fralick, Clark
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n9 p46 May-Jun 2005
The statement "Learning Is Both an Active and Reflective Practice" is very relevant to the authors elementary artroom, where students are encouraged to think about what they are making, to experiment with ideas, and to ask questions of themselves. Art students in grades three through five use digital cameras, computers, PowerPoint, and reflective writing to create electronic portfolios. As soon as the students finish an artwork, they get their digital camera and photograph it. Next they get an "Artist Statement" worksheet to help them write about it. The worksheet has three writing prompts that help students focus on: (1) what they learned or made; (2) how they learned or made it; and (3) where their ideas came from.
