The World's Art in Your Art World
Irvine, Hope
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n8 p22 Apr 2005
In this article, the author states that as an art teacher, your contribution to your students' knowledge of another culture is to familiarize them with evidence of how a group of people produced visual images in that time and place. You should not claim that they will gain understanding of the culture itself from this experience. One art lesson will not make that happen. But it may intrigue them into wanting to learn more. That is why it is valuable to either team teach with a social studies teacher or at least time your lesson to match when students are learning about a culture in another class. Be sure there are appropriate books available in your school library and Internet connections you can recommend to them.
