Jodi Esher, an art teacher at teach at a very large kindergarten through second grade school, finished a continuing ed course entitled Preparing a School Community to Cope with Crisis, and came away completely inspired to make a difference in her school. The object of her new project would be to design, then ultimately create, a mural to become a permanent installation in the school. It was a perfect way to integrate a variety of subjects such as guidance, language arts, and visual arts along with supporting and continuing district goals of school-wide safety, conflict resolution, and problem solving. This project would also promote school unity, pride, and beautification. It was very important that students had a major role in creating this project. Students were asked to draw a picture depicting one of the school's rules. Once all of the drawings were completed, she pulled these images together into one final sketch. Everything in the School Safety Mural is there because a student drew it, and this really gave students a sense of ownership and pride in their school.
