Ivory Snowmen
Mueller, Ann
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n5 p48 Jan 2005
Recalling memories from her own third grade art classes, Ann Mueller, recreated an updated version for her students showing her students how to make snow scenes from Ivory Snow flakes. She showed students the video, The Snowman based on Raymond Briggs's book of the same name. Its beautiful images spur the imagination, and the musical score is appropriately whimsical. Students paid close attention to the images and were asked to think of them as inspiration for creating their own winter scenes. The snow paint was both economical and creative, using only two parts of Ivory Snow Flakes, or Powder, and one part water, then beaten to a fluffy consistency. Students then used brushes to apply the "snow paint" to their pictures of snowmen. Some added snowflakes in the sky. Students shared descriptions of their work, the media that they used, and the effects of different techniques. All enjoyed working with the Ivory Snowpaint and remarked how the fluffy paint made the snowmen seem to jump right out of their pictures.
