A Hindrance to Communication: The Use of Difficult and Incomprehensible Language.
Janicki, Karol
International Journal of Applied Linguistics, v12 n2 p194-217 2002
Reports on three empirical studies carried out within the theoretical framework of folk linguistics, using questionnaire data. Examines the layperson's reactions to the use of difficult and incomprehensible language. Subjects from Germany, Norway, Poland, and the United States were asked which professional language groups exhibit the use of difficult language; subjects were asked to answer questions about the use of incomprehensible language in the academic community.
