Language in the Lives of Ethnic Minorities: Cuban American Families in Miami.
Lambert, Wallace E.; Taylor, Donald M.
Applied Linguistics, v17 n4 p477-500 Dec 1996
Examines the modes of accommodation to America of working- and middle-class mothers of Cuban heritage living in Miami, Florida, in terms of language proficiencies. Findings indicate that working-class mothers encourage their children to learn English in order to succeed, a subtractive form of bilingualism, whereas middle-class mothers encourage Spanish competence, a form of additive bilingualism.
