Arabic and English Compliment Responses: Potential for Pragmatic Failure.
Nelson, Gayle L.; And Others
Applied Linguistics, v17 n4 p411-32 Dec 1996
Investigated similarities and differences between Syrian and American compliment responses using interviews with both groups. Results suggest that both Syrians, who were studying English as a Second Language, and Americans are more likely to either accept or mitigate the force of the compliment than to reject it and that both groups employ similar response types, such as, agreeing utterances and compliment returns.
