The Relationship bBetween Health and Fitness Magazine Reading and Eating-Disordered Weight-Loss Methods among High School Girls.
Thomsen, Steven R.; Weber, Michele M.; Brown, Lora Beth
American Journal of Health Education, v32 n3 p133-38 May-Jun 2001
Investigated the relationship between reading women's health and fitness magazines and using eating disordered diet methods (laxatives, appetite suppressants/diet pills, vomiting, and over-restricting calories) among adolescent high school girls. Student surveys found positive associations between reading frequency and use of unhealthy weight control practices. Frequent readers also scored significantly higher on a scale measuring eating-disordered cognitions. (SM)
