Difficult Starts: Turbulence in the School Year and Its Impact on Urban Students' Achievement.
Weiss, Christopher C.
American Journal of Education, v109 n2 p196-227 Feb 2001
Examined how students' grades were affected by disruptions at the beginning of the school year. Data from student-parent interviews in a large urban district indicated that disruption was widespread in ninth grade. Students who experienced more turbulence received significantly lower grades. Significant levels of between-school differences in turbulence related to higher levels of student variation and turnover. (SM)
