Curriculum Guide for Music Education, K-12. Bulletin 1978, No. 18.
Alabama State Dept. of Education, Montgomery.
This curriculum guide contains objectives, activities, and evaluation procedures for a K-12 music education program. It would be useful to anyone responsible for teaching music. The authors believe that music education has the dual obligation of developing the aesthetic sensitivity of all students regardless of their individual levels of musical talent and of developing the talents of those who are musically gifted. Section one deals with "General Music" for grades K-8. "Instrumental Music" for grades 5-12 is the topic of section two. The third part of the guide treats "Vocal/Choral Music" for grades 5-12. Students are involved in a large variety of activities. A few examples follow. To learn about long and short sounds, children experiment with classroom instruments to determine which have a sustaining quality or a short, percussive sound. To learn about rounds, students sing a familiar round and then pantomime the words of the round so that visually they can see the progression of the round as it moves through the different parts. Using a composition such as "Waltz on Ice" by Prokofiev, students create visuals to aid the understanding of rondo form. Through the use of films, filmstrips, posters and resource persons, students make an indepth study of string and woodwind families. Students also attend concerts and perform for parents. (Author/RM)
