Engineering at the Elementary Level

Can engineering technology be taught at the elementary level? Designing and building trebuchets, catapults, solar cars, and mousetrap vehicles in a west central Florida elementary class was considered very unusual in recent years. After a review of current research on failing schools and poor curriculum, the author wondered what her school could do to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instruction at the elementary level. The author opines that everything in the world has been innovated, yet there's less innovation in the school classroom. Students need the educators of today to prepare them for a world one cannot even imagine at this moment. The author suggests that hands-on, engineering-based activities of the engineering lab, along with a science and math curriculum emphasis and a technological literacy base, should help these students soar above their peers.
