Sometimes students come up with crazy ideas. When this author first started teaching at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia five years ago, she had a sophomore share such an idea with her. He wanted to put solar panels on the school's roof as a way to reduce the school's carbon footprint and set a bright clean energy example for the county, state, and school systems across the country. When they started, they had no idea how much one solar panel cost, let alone an entire system. Luckily, they did have an environmental club under whose auspices they could work. This provided the project with a potential workforce. In the end, although they encountered many challenges, it was worth it. Not only did they succeed in getting solar panels on the roof, they also exceeded even their most hopeful dreams for making the project into a model. The launch was attended by the Environmental Protection Agency administrator and has been a model in their community and in Congress. In this article, the author shares the story of how they did it and provides some tips on how other schools can go solar as well.
