The Solar Energy Task Force Report summarizes data, information, and discussions focusing on solar space and water heating applications. The report is intended to fill a need for curriculum and course development and direction for technical training programs, especially in vocational/technical schools and community colleges. It addresses curriculum suggestions; jobs, tasks, and skills for which training is needed; and equipment recommendations necessary in establishing a solar training center. In general, technical training which produces individuals strictly known as solar technicians, mechanics, installers, etc., is not advocated as the demand for purely solar jobs is uncertain. As such, solar specialization programs at the community college level should be added only in response to the needs of the community. Specific job tasks and functions are outlined for the following solar-related jobs: (1) sales; (2) estimator/designer; (3) installer; (4) electrician (not necessarily trained in the solar program); (5) supervisor; and (6) maintenance service. Examples of existing solar curricula and programs are offered, equipment needs are considered, and cost considerations in setting up a solar training laboratory are outlined.
