Cookin' with Sun: Design and Build Solar Cookers
Brand, Lance; Warren, Ande; Fitzgerald, Mike
Tech Directions, v66 n4 p20-23 Nov 2006
Having students design and construct solar cookers is a great way to teach them about designing to meet human needs and about many basic global issues related to health and the environment. Because the activity includes solid content from the fields of math, science and technology, it is an excellent vehicle for technology educators who want to increase academic content in a hands-on activity that really motivates students. Through studying solar energy, students can learn how to reduce energy consumption and pollution. They can learn how to apply solar technologies to aid in heating water for cleaning, hygiene and bathing. They can also investigate solar technologies and their applications in generating electricity and the heating of homes. This article presents a lesson plan focusing on solar cookers and plans for building a solar cooker.
