An Experimental Project on Energy Education for Rural Women, Primary School Children and Teachers Report.
Pathak, Yogini; Mankodi, Hina
One of the University of Baroda's (India) Rural/Tribal Block Placement Program's major aims during the year 1988-89 was to develop energy consciousness in women, primary school children and teachers. An experimental project was designed for a rural Indian village. The objectives were to obtain information on rural energy resources; assess the role of women and children in meeting energy needs; and prepare the field test lesson plans for the target groups in Kadachla, a village in Gujarat state. Phases I and II consisted of lesson development and preliminary interviews with villagers. Phase III consisted of workshops for women and children. In the women's workshop, cooking methods and fuels were discussed and energy conservation tips were provided. Follow-up discussions indicated that the women understood the importance of the new devices they were using but would need more time before they adopted the use of the devices. In the children's workshop, dramatization, games, role-playing, and question-and-answer sessions were used to teach the concepts of: (1) energy and its presence in everyday activities; (2) energy transformation; and (3) energy chains. Quantitative results of the children's workshop were not obtained. Suggestions for future work included follow-up workshops, extension of the program to other villages, and a workshop for primary school teachers. (BC)
