This publication, one of five sections, was developed for use in first and second year basic agriculture courses in secondary schools in Mississippi. The five lessons focus on the measurement and description of property and the classification of land. The purposes of the lessons are to (1) introduce the units and methods used to measure distance and calculate area; (2) provide information concerning the location of land, using the rectangular survey method for a legal description; (3) develop the student's ability to identify the components and textural class of a soil; (4) provide knowledge of general soil properties and develop the student's ability to estimate these properties in a given soil; and (5) develop the student's ability to classify a soil into standard classes and to designate the highest safe use of that soil. Each lesson uses the same format and consists of an introduction, terminal and specific objectives, instructional procedures (teaching tasks and steps to accomplish each task), learning activities (the instructional materials needed to teach the lesson in a question-and-answer format and transparency masters), supplemental learning activities, a list of supplemental learning aids (reference materials), and a lesson summary.
