Soils in Schools: Embedding Soil Science in STEM
Bryce, Alisa
Teaching Science, v61 n3 p14-18 Sep 2015
Soil science, though relevant to a variety of subjects including science, geography, mathematics, social sciences and history, is typically perceived as a subgenre of agriculture. With a global need for soil scientists, and declining numbers in university soil courses, there's a growing gap between science needs and providers. One way to promote soil science as a field and to encourage interest in soil resources is to integrate soil science into school science classes. The Queensland Branch of Soil Science Australia (SSA) is running a '"Soils in Schools" program that works with teachers to develop soil-focused materials for science classes. The program is currently aimed at high school Years 7-10, and fits within the National Curriculum. This article describes the stepped approach that was used to work with teachers in developing the program as well as the teacher guides and professional development sessions that resulted. A sample classroom activity on linking everyday objects to soil is also included.
