Today's youth must deal with friend management 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through smartphones and such social networking sites as Facebook. Technology in the classroom can be valuable, but not without challenges. The key is well-thought-out policies. While school districts can't completely control how students use their smartphones and other technology outside school hours, this article describes what they can do to limit their use while students are on campus. These include establishing an Internet safety policy; and a smart district communications plan that addresses the use of Facebook at both the district and school levels. The article also discusses the benefits and challenges of BYOD (bring your own device). Districts are allowing them in the classrooms, as it is a cost-effective way to provide more technology in the classroom without the expense of new equipment, but despite FCC provisions, it is difficult to monitor every student to ensure that they are on the school network.
