Exploring and Understanding Relationships
Durland, Maryann M.
New Directions for Evaluation, n107 p25-40 Fall 2005
Although the process of doing social network analysis (SNA) is similar to traditional research and evaluation design, it is in the details that the two traditions diverge. This article describes two areas of differences: (1) the framework for doing SNA; and (2) data collection, analysis, and specific measures. SNA is about relationships and how to measure them. Results are in the form of both numerical data and a visual image called a "sociogram" or "social map." This article explores some of the processes for doing SNA. It describes how graphs are the foundation for understanding social network data, what those data look like, and the other tools of SNA methodologists. Examples from the cases are provided throughout this article. (Contains 9 figures and 2 tables.)
