Forever Outsiders: Jews and History from Ancient Times to August 1935. Holocaust Series, Book 1. First Edition.
Altman, Linda Jacobs
There are eight volumes in this series on the Holocaust. Volumes 1-6 recount the history of the Jewish people in various year groupings: (1) "Ancient Times to August 1935"; (2) "September 1935 to December 1938"; (3) "January 1939 to December 1941"; (4) "January 1942 to June 1943"; (5) "July 1943 to April 1945"; (6) "May 1945 and After." Volumes 7 and 8 provide resources for further study: (7) "A Collection of Primary Sources"; and (8) "A Comprehensive Listing of Media for Further Study." The volumes were designed and written to educate the juvenile reader. They contain chronologies, glossaries, source notes, a list of references for further reading, a bibliography to support the historical narrative, and numerous photographs. This volume one begins the history of the general exclusion of the Jewish people. Its introduction is entitled "No one left to speak for me", a quotation taken from the German clergyman Martin Nirmoller. The chapters of volume one arranged chronologically, as follows: (1) "1800 B.C.E.-500 C.E. The Chosen People'"; (2) "500 C.E.-1550 C.E. Do You Wish to Convert?'"; (3) "The 1500s-1800s Freedom and Fear"; (4) "1900-1923 Unsettled Times"; (5) "1923-1929 Upstarts and Rebels"; and (6) "1930-August 1935 The Gathering Storm." A chronology of the Jewish people from 70 C.E. to September 1935 is presented, as well as a chronology of the Holocaust from 1933-1945. (EH)
