Analyzing Perceptions of Prospective Teachers about Their Media Literacy Competencies

The purpose of this study is to analyze perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies in terms of different variables. This is a descriptive research in the survey model which tries to detect the current situation. Study group includes 580 prospective teachers from Turkish, Primary School, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and Preschool Teacher Training programs in 2011-2012 academic periods in Faculty of Education at Kastamonu University. Data is collected by "Media Literacy Level Assessment Scale." According to research findings, it is found that perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies are high. Perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies don't change significantly according to their gender and age. However; perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies change significantly according to their departments. Having a computer affects perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies significantly. Having an access to internet and reading newspaper regularly don't affect perceptions of prospective teachers about their media literacy competencies significantly.
