Strategies for Coping with Educational and Social Consequences of Chronic Ear Infections in Rural Communities.
Pillai, Patrick
Rural Special Education Quarterly, v19 n2 p31-34 Spr 2000
Children with chronic ear infections experience a lag time in understanding speech, which inhibits classroom participation and the ability to make friends, and ultimately reduces self-esteem. Difficulty in hearing affects speech and vocabulary development, reading and writing proficiency, and academic performance, and could lead to placement in special education. Strategies for communicating with and teaching children with hearing loss are presented. (TD)
