The Politics of Youth, Sex, and Health Care in American Schools.
Button, James W.; Rienzo, Barbara A.
Noting that partnership between health and education is an inexpensive and expedient way to meet the pressing physical and social problems affecting students in low-income families, this book explores the history, nature, and political dynamics involved in building and sustaining school-based health clinics (SBHCs). The chapters of the book are as follows: (1) "Evolution of Health Services in Schools," including effectiveness of and opposition to such services; (2) "Major Problems of School Health Centers," covering both day-to-day and major underlying issues, and characteristics of less successful clinics; (3) "The Establishment and Success of School Health Reforms," including the role of the media, funding, and characteristics of successful clinics; (4) "Sexuality Services and Political Opposition," including characteristics of clinics offering sexuality services and strategies of opposition and support; and (5) "The Future of SBHCs as a School Reform: Issues and Recommendations," including mental health services, the gender gap in services, and neglect of Latino students. (Contains extensive references organized by chapter.) (HTH)
