Using Problem-Based Learning to Enhance Team and Player Development in Youth Soccer
Hubball, Harry; Robertson, Scott
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v75 n4 p38 Apr 2004
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a coaching and teaching methodology that develops knowledge, abilities, and skills. It also encourages participation, collaborative investigation, and the resolution of authentic, "ill-structured" problems through the use of problem definition, teamwork, communication, data collection, decision-making, planning and goal-setting, active performance, and reflective analysis. While traditional coaching methods do not always meet the developmental needs of diverse individuals and teams, PBL is an alternative practice that some youth-sport coaches find successful. This article describes the successful experiences of PBL in a youth soccer program.
