Snail Trails

The slime trails of snails lead the author's students to a better understanding of science as inquiry and the processes of science. During this five-day activity, students get up close and personal with one of her favorite creatures, the land snail. Students begin by observing the organism and recording their observations. After making initial observations, students should make a list of questions they have about the creatures. Students then learn about the unique characteristics of the organisms, continue to make their own observations as they perform some simple experiments, and then design their own experiment to answer a question that they have asked. Finally, students will be asked to make a list of any new questions they have as a result of their investigations. Using any organism, an instructor can teach students to use the process of science, and teach science as inquiry, in a biology class.
