This article describes an ethical dilemma that one member of a middle school teaching team, Jill Vega, experienced, and outlines the way she resolved the issue. Vega's colleague, Nancy Smart, a new and energetic young teacher, designed a cross-curricular experiential learning trip to extend classroom learning in the field by providing valuable experiences that would bring current and future lesson plans to life inside the classroom. The team did its homework about the logistics and costs of taking nearly 50 middle school students to New York City. While many of the students could easily afford this trip, not all of them could. Vega knew that the costs would have been a burden for a few households, even if they were too proud to say so. As the team's planning process unfolded Vega privately struggled with the conflict between meeting the needs of each student versus meeting the needs of most students, which presented an individual-versus-community professional dilemma for her.
