The use of new and advanced technologies has a significant potential to impact the way students communicate in a number of contexts and settings. Many students will find themselves in both academic and career situations where computer-mediated communication (CMC) group interaction will be necessary. As a result, it is important to integrate research that assesses the influence of technology on a group's ability to develop roles and norms, establish power and status, and engage in the decision-making process. Thus, the purpose of this particular exercise is to help students internalize the theoretical principles of CMC group interaction. Specifically, this assignment has been designed to expose students to small-group interaction with limited face-to-face interaction and provide them with an opportunity to compare and contrast this experience with their previous group interaction. Moreover, students should be able to better understand foundational principles and theories of group communication (e.g., group norms, roles, structuration, conflict, etc.) when applied to decision making that relies solely on technology to communicate.
