Building Community: Lessons Learned from Small Islands
Tokarz, Barb
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n195 p74-78 Sep-Oct 2010
Establishing caring communities in child care centers is one of the most important, yet challenging undertakings for early childhood professionals. Lessons in accomplishing this goal can be learned from the inhabitants of the island communities of coastal Maine who work together to overcome the challenges of living in remote locations. In this article, the author shares the lessons she has learned from her travel to the islands. By following the example of the islanders and applying the principles of skilled dialog to reach mutual understanding, using creative thinking to solve problems, preparing for life's unexpected glitches, sharing ideas and resources, and living up to job responsibilities, early childhood professionals can make significant progress in learning to be part of a caring community.
