SmAll That Jazz
Bluemel, Dina
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n3 p40-41 Nov 2007
This article describes how Viktor Schreckengost's work had been a learning experience for the students of Grant Elementary School. Viktor's most famous work, "Jazz Bowl," was the focus of the author's curriculum. Viktor created this punch bowl for Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The bowl was so popular that a series of them were produced. The author's class learned about the Jazz Bowl and what made it special and were challenged to create their own interpretive Jazz Bowls inspired by Viktor's designs, using cut paper, black scratchboard, and clay. They wrote letters to the artist, who, at age 101, still lives in nearby Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Viktor and his wife, Gene, delighted with the children's artwork, responded by visiting them. Subsequently, the Viktor Schreckengost Foundation helped arrange for the students' designs to be exhibited at a local arts center. Viktor and Gene Schreckengost attended the opening of the exhibition, titled "SmAll that Jazz." Eventually the entire school participated in a similar unit on Viktor's life and work, developed upon request by Art on Wheels, a local curriculum development group. In addition to the art and design objectives, students have learned such lessons as respect for the elderly and how to run their own arts foundation. (Contains 2 online resources.)
