Gifted Students and Sleep
Harsh, John; Karnes, Frances; Eiers, Patrick
Parenting for High Potential, v2 n1 p4-6, 8-9 Sep 2012
In this article, the authors emphasize that good sleep health is essential if gifted children are to gain the greatest benefit from opportunities to grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually while maintaining good psychological and physical health. The outstanding abilities that characterize these children and enable high levels of achievement in enriched academic, creative, and social domains likely result in demands and conflicts that challenge their ability to meet their sleep needs. In the interest of ensuring the well-being of these children who have so much to offer, steps should be taken to avoid the burden of poor sleep health at a critical time in their development. Parents are encouraged to be proactive on this issue. They should educate themselves about sleep, monitor their children's sleep continuously, and be good models as well as good advocates of sleep health.
