Stephen Marc: Photographer for Our Time
Smith, Toni M. Shorter
Art Education, v65 n5 p25-32 Sep 2012
It is said that "a picture is worth a thousand words" as visual images can express complex and multilayered ideas. Sometimes photographic imagery is so strong and resonant of certain success, struggles, or events that it becomes key to a community or generation. As historic records, photographs are uniquely able to present not only success and progress, but a particular kind of malice that existed and still exists within our American psyche. Given the current barrage of media images coupled with the commodification of black images, how might a photographer focused on black history impact our vision, perceptions, and understandings of race and the antecedents of slavery and the Underground Railroad (UGRR) that loom so conspicuously in the background of America's current historic moment? Artists and art educators need to discuss, analyze, deconstruct, and interpret visual imagery. They need to discern its impact on their communities, and reflect on how this information affects their understanding of who they are as Americans. Photographer Stephen Marc engages and educates educators about the importance of black history and the UGRR, and presents their connections to and impacts on our current social conditions. An examination of the works of Stephen Marc invites students to connect with important images in Black history, specifically those from the Underground Railroad, and to recognize how they impact our interpretations of history today.
