Basic Emergency Medical Technician Skills Manual.
Oklahoma State Dept. of Vocational and Technical Education, Stillwater. Curriculum and Instructional Materials Center.
This manual was developed to help students preparing to become emergency medical technicians (EMTs) learn standardized basic skills in the field. The manual itemizes the steps and performance criteria of each required skill and uses an accompanying videotape series (not included) to enhance the educational experience. The five units of the manual, keyed to the five tapes of the series, cover the following: (1) patient assessment, including pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and temperature; (2) cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults and children and treating complete airway obstruction; (3) splinting injuries and transporting patients; (4) oxygen administration; and (5) hemorrhage control, wound dressing, shock management, and childbirth. Three appendixes cover skills for using a short spine board and pneumatic antishock garments and list references for each of the 40 EMT skills covered in the manual. (KC)
