Basic Science Training Program.
Brummel, Clete
These six learning modules were developed for Lake Michigan College's Basic Science Training Program, a workshop to develop good study skills while reviewing basic science. The first module, which was designed to provide students with the necessary skills to study efficiently, covers the following topics: time management; an overview of a study method that focuses on the class syllabus, reading assignments, lecture note taking, textbook note taking, and self-quizing; laboratory work and tests; and suggestions for test preparation and test taking. The second module teaches students to derive the meaning of new words through their understanding of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. The third module teaches students about the basic metric units of length, volume, mass, and temperature, enabling them to perform quantitative measurements and estimates using the metric system. The fourth module imparts the knowledge and skill necessary for the proper use of the microscope, looking at the history, characteristics, and parts of the microscope and reviewing procedures for its use. In the fifth module, students become familiar with the levels of structure and complexity in the biological sciences (i.e., atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism). The final module offers basic information on human anatomy, with particular focus on the human skeletal system. (EJV)
