Teenage Pregnancy: An Update and Guide to Mott Foundation Resources.
Rugg, Carol D.
This document focuses on the involvement of the Mott Foundation in the problem of teenage pregnancy. After a brief introduction to the topic including statistics on the incidence of teenage pregnancy, methods by which other organizations and foundations have attacked the problem of teenage pregnancy are described. The role of the Mott Foundation in identifying problems and developing programs for teenage pregnancy, which dates back to 1938, is also described, as is the dual focus of the Mott Foundation on ameliorating the effects of teenage pregnancy for the mother and on primary prevention through replication of a low-cost, school-based model for high-risk youth. Four grant networks supported by Mott are described, along with their projects. These networks include the Too-Early Childbearing Network; the National Urban League, Incorporated; the Junior League of St. Louis; and the Women and Foundations/Corporate Philanthropy program. Findings of the Mott Foundation in the area of teenage pregnancy are summarized, noting that no single well-tested, cost effective primary prevention approach that will eliminate the problem of teenage pregnancy exists. At the conclusion of the report, the four grant networks and their projects are described in more detail, and names and addresses of contact persons within the networks and projects are provided.
