The Fluid Foil: The Seventh Simple Machine

A simple machine does one of two things: create a mechanical advantage (lever) or change the direction of an applied force (pulley). Fluid foils are unique among simple machines because they not only change the direction of an applied force (wheel and axle); they convert fluid energy into mechanical energy (wind and Kaplan turbines) or vice versa, mechanical energy into fluid energy (fans and propellers). The impacts of the fluid foil in the modern world cannot be overestimated--historically, socially, or economically. The fluid foil has had a major impact on the evolution of the global economy and on human society in the areas of transportation and energy and power technologies. In this article, the author aims to motivate science, technology, engineering, and math teachers to include the fluid foil in their curriculums and deepen their instructional pedagogy through the integration of STEM concepts.
